Ottawa, March 12, 2022 – Wheelchair Rugby Canada finishes with Silver in the 2022 Americas Championship after a 50-54 loss to Team USA in the Finals. Canada suffers their only defeat in the tournament in their rematch with the Americans.
“A tough lose in the finals is never easy,” said Co-Captain, Trevor Hirschfield. “The USA played a strong game and capitalized on our errors. We came to Colombia to qualify for Worlds, and we did that. Now it’s time to build on everything we learned and focus on World Championships.”
USA finishes the tournament with Gold, Canada with Silver, Brazil earned Bronze.
“Our defence didn’t produce; we weren’t able to create turnovers. Kudos to USA, they played very well. They made good adjustments after yesterday’s game, said Coach Patrick Côté. “I am very proud our week [in Colombia] Our goals were to qualify for Worlds, that [was done].”
“We have a busy schedule up [until World Championships]; our goal was to prepare the best team possible; I believe that we got everything to be the best team at Worlds.”
As a result of the Americas Championship, the medaling teams have qualified for the Worlds Championship in Vejle, Denmark this October.
Even though we didn’t get the outcome we wanted, we feel like we played a strong tournament,” said Co-Captain, Patrice Dagenais. “The team is going in the right direction, and we look forward to the opportunity of facing the USA again at Worlds!”
