Rising Stars: Meet Paralympic Contenders Joel Ewert, Matt Debly and Rio Kanda Kovac

Joel Ewert, Matt Debly and Rio Kanda Kovac played pivotal roles in leading the national team to a silver medal during the 2024 Paralympic Qualification Tournament, securing their spot at their first Paralympics. Their skill and determination and a show of resilience that embodies the essence of being a Paralympian. As they prepare to showcase their prowess and passion, we figured we would dive into their journeys to how they got here.

As they prepare to showcase their prowess and passion, we figured we would dive into their journeys to how they got here.  

Joel Ewert: Constantly Learning Both On and Off the Court 

Having been part of the national wheelchair rugby team since 2019, Joel Ewert’s international achievements include a notable silver medal at the 2024 Paralympic Qualification Tournament. He also helped his team secure 6th place at the 2024 Canada Cup. A graduate in biomedical studies at the University of Northern British Columbia. Joel looks forward to entering the next phase of his learning journey as he enters UNBC’s Northern Medical Program in Fall 2024. As he looks forward to making his Paralympic debut, Joel remains committed to both his athletic and academic pursuits.  

 

Matt Debly: From Basketball Star to Wheelchair Rugby Paralympian 

Matt Debly’s journey into wheelchair rugby began following his standout performance at the 2015 Canada Games in Wheelchair Basketball. Having stood out during the competition, Matt was invited to participate in a wheelchair rugby prospect camp.  

Over the months that followed, Matt eventually established himself in the sport, eventually earning himself a spot on the National Team Program in 2017. Matts achievements include a 6th place finish at the 2024 Canada Cup, as well as silver medals, at the 2024 Paralympic Qualification Tournament, the 2023 Santiago Parapan American Games, and the 2022 Canada Cup. With a promising career ahead, Matt remains focused on making a lasting impact on the international stage. 

 

Rio Kia Kovac: Youthful Spirit with Boundless Potential 

Starting up at the tender age of 13, Rio Kanda Kovacs career ultimately begun after watching the National Team play during the 2015 Toronto Para-Pan Am Games, where he got introduced to the sport. Now in his 20s, and despite being the youngest athlete on the national team, Rio has already made significant strides. Rios achievements include a 6th place finish at the 2024 Canada Cup, as well as silver medals at the 2024 Paralympic Qualification Tournament, 2023 Santiago Parapan American Games, 2023 International Wheelchair Rugby Cup, and the 2022 WWR Americas Championship. 

As Rio continues to develop his skills and experience, he remains focused on his ultimate goal of representing Canada at the Paralympic Games, striving to inspire others along the way.
