Biography
Matt Debly’s first interaction with the sport of wheelchair rugby came after he had competed at the 2015 Canada Games in wheelchair basketball. Having stood out during the competition for his overall athleticism and aggressive style of play, Matt was invited to participate in a wheelchair rugby prospects camp. He accepted and following his first wheelchair rugby experience, Matt was hooked by the sport’s fast-pace and physical contact.
Over the months that followed, Matt would work hard to establish himself within the sport. It would eventually earn him a spot on the National Team Program in 2017, a program that trains athletes with the potential to represent Canada at international level competitions, and a place on Team Canada’s 2018 Canada Cup roster.
Matt is now in line to be one of five debutants who will be representing Canada at the upcoming Wheelchair Rugby World Championships in August. Undoubtedly a great achievement for such a young athlete, but Matt would be the first to tell you that it’s just the start and that there’s more to come from him.
