After nearly two decades of remarkable dedication and outstanding contributions to wheelchair rugby, Canadian veteran Fabien “Fab” Lavoie has officially announced his retirement. Lavoie, a true legend in the sport, has left a memorable mark on Team Canada through his fearless style of play and unparalleled commitment.
Reflecting over his time Fab states, “It’s a heartbreaking decision to announce my retirement, it’s not something I was ready for but something that is necessary for my own health and for my family. I have lived my dream for about 23 years of competing at the highest level in my sport while travelling the world. I’ve met a lot of different people and made a lot of friends. I would like to thank all the teams that welcomed me and had the pleasure to compete with. I’m starting a new book in my life. I will always be a rugby player in my heart, and I’ll be back in the world of rugby in some form of another once my new life is all sorted, and my health is back to its normal state. I want to send my sincere love and appreciation to everybody that supported me over the years.”
Three years after stepping on to the court, Fabien Lavoie was named to the Canadian National Wheelchair Rugby Team. Throughout his career, Lavoie has participated in various international and domestic competitions.

“Today we’re losing a warrior,” states head coach Patrick Côté, “Through the years, one thing was for sure, Fab was always going to bring some fight and energy with him. We knew what we were going to get. That would raise the team up. Beyond anything, I always really appreciated his authenticity. That quality will definitely serve him in whatever comes next. You got this Fab!”
Reflecting over his years playing with Fab, co-captain Patrice Dagenais ‘Pico’ states “Fab is a player who always gave his heart and soul for the National Team. He played with lots of fire and always had his teammates’ backs. He contributed to the success of the program over the years and as his linemate for over 10 years, I will truly miss competing alongside him.”
As Fabien celebrates over two decades of commitment to the Canadian national wheelchair rugby team, his journey continues to inspire both athletes and fans alike. His remarkable career stands as a testament to the power of determination, resilience and the transformative impact of sport on individuals overcoming adversity.
