Campbell joining Hall of Fame in October.

Wheelchair Rugby Canada (WRC) would like to congratulate Duncan Campbell on his upcoming induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. On Sunday October 3rd, he will join the class of 2020-21 in a virtual event celebrating Athletes and Builders in sport. Campbell and 11 others will be awarded the Order of Sport, the highest sporting honour in Canada.

The full list of inductees can be found here.

Duncan Campbell will be inducted in the Builder category for his role in developing the sport of Wheelchair Rugby from its early inception in 1976. Campbell’s involvement has led to the transformation of the sport from its beginnings, originally called “Murderball”. The sport has since evolved to become one of most popular Parasports, making its Paralympic Games debut in 1996 as a demonstration sport and achieving full medal status in 2000.

A Builder is an individual who has outstandingly contributed to Canadian sport as a leader, administrator, official, coach, business leader, and media or in other roles.

“I am so very proud of how far this Canadian made game has come from its humble beginnings in 1977. The players now are truly athletes who train hard, compete hard, and yet maintain the rugby social community off the court” said Duncan Campbell. “It has been fantastic to experience this development from the start until now.”

The live event will take place virtually on October 3rd, 2021 and will be open to all Canadians. Information on how you can support Duncan and participate will be released in the coming months. This update follows Duncan’s Induction Announcement made last May.

As one of North America’s oldest sports museums, the organization’s focus is on recognition, education, curation, and thought leadership. These four pillars help to support and celebrate Canada’s sport heroes for the value and impact they return to their communities. Nearly 700 people have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since establishment in 1955, and as of 2019, the new Order of Sport is awarded as part of induction to Canada’s top athletes and builders for their ongoing role in building Canada through sport.
